Art Studio IIIA - Week 11

 Week 11

Lecture

Making

I wanted to re photograph the installed work, with the idea of adding an element of confusion through the use of multiple exposures.

During the crit, one thing that was didn't come across clearly, and that I would like to communicate is the feeling of confusion though the neural remapping during the grief process, where nothing makes sense, where there are conflicting realities.

This work was looking at how I bring the idea of two realities and confusion into the work - the inner world and the outer world.

The morning light in the studio was casting some really lovely shadows, so I utilised this natural light.

Above - single exposures of the neurons

Above - multiple exposures in camera - 3 layers

Above - multiple exposures in camera - 3 layers, vertical format.

I feel like theses work reasonably well in a photographic format and could potentially stand alone as prints.

Dark Space

The next step was to test out the video I created during the easter break projected onto the work in the dark space

Above - single shots of the neurons, at various stages of the video.

Above - multiple exposures of the projection.

I feel the shots with the multiple colours work better, as for me this speaks more to the idea of a brianbow. The main issue with these images and presenting to work as still photographs is that it doesn't show the changes in the neuron structure which is what I was really wanting to show, along with the confusion.

Performance Test in the Dark Space

The performance aspect of the work, I feel is key, so I wanted to test out the remaking of the neurons in the dark pace with the neuron video projected onto the ceramic and neuron structures. I feel bringing the work into the dark space changes the reading and feeling of the work, and I am not sure that I want to work to feel this dark or heavy.

In terms of timing of the performance, I feel like sound would be a good addition to help signify the start and the end. In the projection, there is a sound track, starting with a tranquil sound, going to distortion, to radio confusion.

Test of sound & Colour

The following could be used as just a colour projection over the sculpture/neurons while the performance of rewiring the neurons is taking place.

With the additional of colours to evoke mood

The sound clips used for these were sounds found online, although for this purpose I would be wanting to record sounds from our own local environments to add in.

Memorial Trees

I am thinking about if an urn is a necessary for the installation and am looking back at the idea of the memorial tree and unfired clay to hold the tree and the ashes.

I wanted to test out using a seedling in the clay vessel to see how this would work in with the final piece.

The seedling above will be planted in my garden to test how the clay and tree interact overtime and if the inclusion of ashes in the planting is an option I want to pursue at a later date.

At this stage I am looking at bringing it into a series of photograph of myself holding the seeding.
